DON BOSCO ORATORY WINS IFFK 9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

DON BOSCO ORATORY WINS IFFK 9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
- Report by R.Rodrigues

Don Bosco Oratory (DBO) emerged victorious in the first 9-a-side football tournament organised by Indian Football Federation Kuwait (IFFK) among the 8 participating teams held on 15th January 2010 at the Nasser Stadium in Ardiya. IFFK-affiliated teams were grouped in two in the round-robin league format to give more exposure to all teams. In the action packed semi-finals DBO beat SKYNET Raiders by 1-goal to nil whereas DHL AVC-Kuwait by 2 goals to 1 for a place in the finals. The other teams Santos United, Fahaheel Bros, Veterans, Dominic Savio, AVC–Kuwait and Skynet Raiders displayed brilliant football. In the finals Don Bosco Oratory beat DHL Football Club by 2 goals to nil. DBO scored the first goal in the very second minute of the match when a miss pass from DHL midfield was intercepted by Larry who unleashed a powerful grounder giving no chance to Pillay in the DHL goal scoring the fastest goal of the matches played, deservingly winning a special prize. DBO kept the pressure on DHL and would have increased the tally, but their attacking midfielder Ronny was unlucky to convert easy sitters. DHL after having overcome AVC in a tough semi-final match could not find the rhythm and were on the back foot defending their citadel. DBO’s hard working central midfielder Steven unleashed a powerful shot which was deflected by DHL goalkeeper in the path of Velenky (Muna) who easily tapped in to give DBO a crucial 2 goal lead going in to the lemon time. In the second half DHL tried their level best, but stout defending by Michael and Liston and some able goalkeeping by Blesson in DBO goal kept DHL at a distance. As the match progressed towards the end DHL poured the entire force in the DBO half with Godfrey missing a glorious chance to reduce the margin. Rosario of DHL who had an outstanding tournament tried in vain to get DHL back in the match, but in vain. DBO held firm and came out victorious. The tournament started in the afternoon and the semi-finals and the finals were played under floodlights under IFFK special arrangements and was attended by a large crowd cheering their favourite teams and prominent among them was footballer and sports journalist Gasper Crasto, Peter Mendes, Eusebio Rogtao & Marian Fernandes. It was a pleasant sight to see a number of families attending the proceedings throughout the chilly evening. As the little children grew impatient watching the professionals in action, IFFK decided to give them the opportunity to hit the leather during the semi-finals break and it was joy to watch the two teams displaying promising talents. These are rare opportunities in recent times and kudos to IFFK for taking the game to tiny tots. In the first Semi final Don Bosco beat Skynet Raiders by one goal to nil. The match was dominated by Skynet Raiders throughout in terms of possession, but a sudden move by DBO took Skynet by surprise with Don Bosco star midfielder Steven unleashing a powerful volley from top of the box which gave no chance to rival goalkeeper to put DBO one up. In the second half Skynet tried hard in vain to equalize with Philip Ferrao marshalling the midfield, but luck deserted them and DBO marched into the finals. The second semi-final was action packed where DHL beat AVC-Kuwait by 2 goals to 1. DHL went 2-0 up in the first half, however after lemon break AVC were all over DHL in search of an equalizer, but DHL defence stood firm with some deadly goal line saves. Soon AVC upped the ante and scored the first goal through Kevin Vaz, but luck and the all important equaliser eluded them as Agnelo Miranda’s powerful shot deflected the target by inches. DHL held firm to enter the finals and AVC ended their campaign. The chief guest, Gaspar Almeida, was welcomed by Dale Ferrao with a flower bouquet to a thunderous applause. A staunch football supporter, he is in the forefront in the promotion of Goan, Konkani and Indian cultural activities and moderates Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter of www.goa-world.com. AVC –KUWAIT & DOMNIC SAVIO TRIUMPH IN IFF-KUWAIT LEAGUE - FAHAHEEL BROS. JOINS IFF-KUWAIT

INDIAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION - KUWAIT

AVC –KUWAIT & DOMNIC SAVIO TRIUMPH IN IFFK LEAGUE.
FAHAHEEL BROS JOINS IFFK

The 8th round of the ongoing IFFK league kicked off marking the start of the new year and the end of the holiday period at the Daya School ground in Kuwait.
In the 1st match seasoned campaigners AVC-Kuwait took on favourites SkyNet. The match started on a cautious approach as both the teams tried to shake off the lethargy of the holiday period. AVC mounted pressure on SkyNet citadel, but they held well in the initial stages. SkyNet succumbed to the sustained pressure of AVC after 15 minutes when a clinical cross from Francis Jr. was headed in by Majid to put AVC 1-0 up. The second goal was a blinder by AVC’s star striker Anthony who connected a beautiful cross from veteran Francis Sr.and headed the ball in before SkyNet’s defence could see the ball. At the lemon break AVC were 2-0 up. The second half saw SkyNet pumped up and raided AVC’s half continuously in search of a reducer with Philip Ferrao of SkyNet manning the entire midfield, but the inability of their strikers Sami and Sabeer to finish off and some stout defending by AVC’s defenders led by Vincy held SkyNet at bay. After withstanding the initial pressure, AVC’s midfield led by Agnelo Miranda and Francis Sr. took the game away from SkyNet and substitute Melvy after a bustling run from the right flank scored AVC’s third goal. After this most of the game was played in SkyNet’s half with Anthony completing his brace and Braulio adding one more for AVC. After the 5th goal AVC left the guard down and SkyNet sprung into life by scoring 2 goals towards the fag end of the match through their hardworking strikers Sami and Sabeer. The game ended 5-2 in favour of AVC. This was the 1st defeat for SkyNet and 5the consecutive win for AVC in the league.

The second match was played between Domnic Savio and INDIANS.
Domnic Savio started the game in right earnest and attacked the opposition from the start. INDIANS could not do much to contain the young guns of Dominic Savio. With Alex and Anthony marshalling the midfield for Dominic Savio, INDIANS could not sniff much. On the other side Abdullah opened the scoring for Dominic Savio in the first half.
Talib added the 2nd and the 3rd to go into the lemon break leading 3-0. Leslie and his teammates tried hard to create the openings for INDIANS, but the midfield manned by Steven and co for Dominic Savio would not let anything beyond them. The second half was similar to the first one and Talib completed his hattrick by scoring the 4th for Dominic Savio. It was similar story for INDIANS who went on the defensive to stem the rot and hence allowed the fleet footed Dominic Savio forwards and midfielders to camp in their half. This allowed defensive errors and Assad completed the brace for Dominic Savio.

The final goal was scored by Alex whose shot from top of the box gave no chance to INDIANS goalkeeper who was guilty of some sloppy collections before. The game ended with the score 7-0 in favour of Dominic Savio. INDIANS will have to improve their performance in the coming matches for some decent standings in the league, but the spirit shown by both the teams was commendable. Christopher of Dominic Savio made history by becoming the youngest player to play at the age of 14 years in IFFK league and credit to the youngster and the club Dominic Savio for achieving this feat.

The matches were supervised by the professionals on the expatriate football circuit -Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA).

As advised earlier IFFK announces the shift of venue for the forthcoming matches. Moving away from the artificial greens of Daiya, IFFK shifts to the natural greens of Mishref Stadium which is a compliment of Public Affairs of Youth and Sports to IFFK.
